Hydrophyllum appendiculatum, Great Waterleaf

Hydrophyllum appendiculatum

Great Waterleaf

  • Biennial
  • Average soils
  • Partial to full shade
  • 2’ tall, 2’ wide
  • Spring Blooms
  • Ontario native, Thrives in Open Woodland and Forest ecosystems

New to me, grown from seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery https://www.prairiemoon.com/hydrophyllum-appendiculatum-great-waterleaf-prairie-moon-nursery.html

These are a very showy, biennial species, forming a green rosette of leaves the first year and then blooming and setting seed the following spring.

Recommended in Lorraine Johnson’s blog post Ghost Plants about hard to source species deserving of wider planting in Ontario gardens

Please check out the Prairie Moon listing at the link above for more details.

Species that were not sown / aren't being sown for 2023 are marked with an *
Species that are native to this continent, but not historically native to Ontario are marked with a ~
While it rarely comes up, I do reserve the right to limit plant quantities, mostly to help ensure that as many native plant gardens as possible become a reality
