The Native Plant Store can Now be Found Here

  • This page will remain accessible as a library page until I have all the species moved to the new page and all the quirks worked out in the new software so it can function as a searchable library.
  • Please see the Using the Plant Library  page  for some tips on how to make the most of the information in this existing library to select species for creating a healthy native plant community suited to the conditions of your site.

Sporobolus heterolepis, Prairie Dropseed

Sporobolus heterolepis

Prairie Dropseed

  • Average or Slightly Wet to Very Dry Soils
  • Full Sun to Very Light Shade
  • 24” tall, 18” to 36” spacing
  • Summer Blooms, Fall Seed Heads
  • Ontario Native, Thrives in Meadow and Dry Meadow Ecosystems

Still new to my gardens, grown from seeds sourced from Prairie Moon Nursery.

https://www.prairiemoon.com/sporobolus-heterolepis-prairie-dropseed-prairie-moon-nursery.html

A luxuriant, clumping grass that grows to roughly 2' in height and spread and thrives in hot, dry settings.

A lovely matrix species for a dry meadow ecosystem but they can take a few years to mature from seed so you may also want to include some Side-Oats Grama and / or June Grass in the mix.

Please check out the Prairie Moon listing at the link above for more details.
