The Native Plant Store can Now be Found Here

  • This page will remain accessible as a library page until I have all the species moved to the new page and all the quirks worked out in the new software so it can function as a searchable library.
  • Please see the Using the Plant Library  page  for some tips on how to make the most of the information in this existing library to select species for creating a healthy native plant community suited to the conditions of your site.

Silphium terebinthinaceum, Prairie Dock

Silphium terebinthinaceum

Prairie Dock

  • Full sun, light shade
  • Average to moderately wet or moderately dry soils
  • 6’ to 9’ tall, 2’ to 4’ wide
  • Mid to late summer bloom
  • Ontario Native, Feature Plant

New to me this year, grown from seeds from Prairie Moon Nursery

This species is one of the largest for a prairie setting, with huge leaves and bloom stems that can extend above other tallgrass prairie species, like Big Bluestem. They are slow to mature, drought resistant once established and not easy to move because of the mass of their root system and overall size. A striking, long-term addition to an ecosystem, they should be placed with the same type of attention to their mature size as shrubs or small trees.

Please check out the Prairie Moon listing at the link above for more details.
