The Native Plant Store can Now be Found Here

  • This page will remain accessible as a library page until I have all the species moved to the new page and all the quirks worked out in the new software so it can function as a searchable library.
  • Please see the Using the Plant Library  page  for some tips on how to make the most of the information in this existing library to select species for creating a healthy native plant community suited to the conditions of your site.

Panicum virgatum, Switch Grass

Panicum virgatum

Switch Grass

  • Average to Moderately Dry or Moderately Wet Soils
  • Full Sun to Light Shade
  • 48” tall, 24” to 48” spacing
  • Summer Blooms, Fall Seed Heads
  • Ontario Native, Thrives in Meadow and Dry Meadow Ecosystems

Still new to my gardens, grown from seeds sourced from Prairie Moon Nursery.

At their best in full sun settings, this grass is lovely for massing and is the parent species of many garden and landscape cultivars. Like many of those cultivars, these have a fairly clumping appearance but can spread by slowly by rhizomes and quickly by seed if there are open spaces in the landscape so they have the potential to overwhelm small spaces or less enthusiastic species.

Please check out the Prairie Moon listing at the link above for more details.
