The Native Plant Store can Now be Found Here

  • This page will remain accessible as a library page until I have all the species moved to the new page and all the quirks worked out in the new software so it can function as a searchable library.
  • Please see the Using the Plant Library  page  for some tips on how to make the most of the information in this existing library to select species for creating a healthy native plant community suited to the conditions of your site.

Andropogon gerardii, Big Bluestem

Andropogon gerardii

Big Bluestem

  • Average to slightly wet or slightly dry soils
  • Full Sun to light shade
  • 4’ to 7’ tall, 2’ to 3’ wide, spreading to form a patch
  • Early summer blooms followed by eye catching seed heads well into the fall
  • Ontario Native, Thrives in meadow ecosystems. Adapts well to garden conditions where sufficient space is available

Still new to my gardens, grown from seeds sourced from Prairie Moon Nursery.

A large grass that can spread more than is suited to small gardens but that is perfect for large spaces and for meadows.

Best in full sun, where they can grow to more than 7’ in height. Happy in a range of soil moisture conditions.

Please check out the Prairie Moon listing at the link above for more details.
